Crisis Nursery Blog

Rene Dennis, Selma Sequra and Nicole Boloyan all took time out create their own calls for action.

We are now just six hours away from the expiration of our partnership with Groupon. Currently, we're at 213 donations - 87 away from our ultimate goal of 300, or $3,000 that would got toward our Children's Shelter. We've been trying as hard as we can to email, Facebook, and Tweet our supporters to both get the word out to friends and to donate themselves. Everyone in the office has been incredibly excited for this week because of the tremendous opportunity our time on Groupon gives us. The staff at the Children's Shelter have been anxiously watching the count on Groupon's website in hopes of being able to give more to their respite/shelter kids.

For our Children's Shelter, hitting the tipping point is only a free throw shot in a difficult game.

Yesterday we hit the tipping point on our Groupon campaign within hours of its launch! While we're excited about the promise to provide services for five children, it's just a start. Those five children would only receive services for a single day, based off the tipping point; it does not account for the fact that many of our children require our resources for weeks, months, and (in some cases, like one boy who's been with us for most of his life) years. This also does not account for the fact that we regularly, unfortunately, have to turn children/families away because our beds are taken by children from the Department of Public Safety, leaving local kids without a chance.

We launched on Groupon today! When checked at 8 this morning, we had 9 donations; within just two hours we were at 60 and rising. We're now at 109! That means that 14 children can receive emergency services at our Shelter! We're beyond ecstatic regarding the results so far, and thank you to everyone who's contributed. However, we still have two and a half days left on Groupon, and we're aiming to provide more. Can you help us reach 150 donations before the end of the night?

Perceptions of what a Children's Shelter is really like varies wildly by person. For one person, a shelter may be a place where re-hydrated and reheated food is served to unwanted kids that sleep in sleeping bags and spend their days having counseling with a social worker. For another, a shelter may be no different from a typical elementary school classroom. Crisis Nursery has its own share of perceptions: we may, at times, appear to have too little resources to operate. On the other end of the spectrum, we may look like we have enough donations that there isn't really a need for more.

As we launch into our Groupon campaign (tomorrow!), we at Crisis Nursery decided that the best way for people to understand our services, mission, and need is to see it from the inside. I visited the Children's Shelter for the first time today, unsure of what to expect (as many others might be), and I ended up walking away with a strengthened desire to do everything I can for these kids.

Crisis Nursery Debuts on Groupon Next Week!

Crisis Nursery Comes to Groupon

Tuesday-Thursday, September 27-29th!

Groupon has become one of the top spots for finding the best deals to use to go out with family, discover new hobbies, splurge on a treat, or to hit the gym. Now, through it's G-Team, it's reaching out to become the go-to place to support your favorite cause.

Groupon has chosen Crisis Nursery to be featured next week, September 27th-29th, as it's Featured Cause! What this means is that while you're looking to see if that new yogurt spot across the street is offering a deal, you can consider contributing toward changing the lives of children and families around you. Each donation made during that time period will go entirely to Crisis Nursery, which will then contribute to growing and supplying our Children's Shelter. Those dollars become tangible gifts to children that need our services to have healthy lives; this includes full, nutritious meals, clean sets of clothes, bedding, arts and crafts supplies, educational materials, and medical care.
